Apply Display Logic to survey questions

Updated over a week ago

Display Logic allows you to customise the survey questions a respondent sees based on their answer to a previous question, or their demographic data. Display logic is found in the Structure tab of your survey.

You can see it on the right hand panel having selected question

What does Display Logic mean?

Display Logic means that a question only appears if either the respondent has answered a previous question in a certain way, or if you have uploaded panel data, for example, department data, you may only want a question to display to respondents from a certain department.

For example, “Do you have caring responsibilities?”

If the respondent replies yes, then they will see the following question. If they select no they skip that question and move on through the survey, possibly seeing other questions instead.

How to apply Display Logic to a survey question

  1. Access the Structure tab:

    • Go to the Structure tab of your Survey, where survey questions are.

  2. Select the Question:

    • Choose the specific question to which you want to apply Display Logic.

  3. Access Display Logic Settings:

    • In the right panel, you should find an option to set Display Logic. Click on it.

  4. Set Up Display Logic:

    • In the Display Logic settings, you'll have the option to add conditions.

    • Choose the question that precedes the one you want to affect from a dropdown menu.

    • Define the criteria for the Display Logic.

For instance, let's say you have a question: "Do you have caring responsibilities?" You can set up the Display Logic as follows:

  • If the answer to "Do you have caring responsibilities?" is "Yes," then display the next question.

  • If the answer to "Do you have caring responsibilities?" is "No," then skip the next question.

This way, your survey will dynamically adjust based on the respondents' answers, making it more user-friendly and efficient.

How to apply Display Logic by demographic or department

The same applies to a question that you want to display only for somebody in a certain department. For example, you may wish people within the Executive department to see a question specific to their department or role.

You can add more than one rule to determine the Display Logic for a question. For instance, you may wish a question to display for people within the Executive department, or people within your ‘Consultants’ team.

Using “And” rules for Display Logic

You can also use an “And” rule to determine Display Logic. For example, you may wish people to only see a certain question if they are from the Executive Department and they are a manager.

A respondent has to meet both of these requirements in order to see that question.

Testing Display Logic

Once you have applied Display Logic to your question/s, the following icon will appear next to it:

Test your survey thoroughly to ensure that people are seeing the correct sequence of questions, based on their responses or their data.
