Add text piping to a question

Adding Text Piping to survey questions

Updated over a week ago

Text piping is a way of customising survey questions to include a variable, like Department, from your participant file or self-select questions. It is used to create a more personalised survey experience for respondents.

Please note that piped text can only be inserted into your custom questions.

Adding piped text into a question

To insert piped text into a survey question, head to “Manage Questions” and “Likert Questions”, then select the question you want to customise. Next, choose ‘edit question’.

Add ‘{QCode}’ into the question to insert a line of code. Now you can choose which variable to pull through and replace this code in your survey question.

Please note: Text piping uses data from your participant file. You must upload this before completing the next step.

Customise piped text with a variable

To customise your piped text with a variable, click on the question within your survey Structure and scroll down to “Customise QCode on the question settings”.

Now, under “QCode to display in survey” choose the variable to use in your question. Variables are pulled through from the headings in your participant file or self-select survey questions.

Under “Generic QCode term for use on the dashboard”, you can specify how you’d like the piped text to appear in the results dashboard. This text must be generic.

For example, if the variable “Department” has been piped into the following question, “People in my {QCode} work well together”, then you may want to use the word “Department”. Click ‘Save Changes’ before moving on.

Reporting on piped text questions

On your survey results dashboard, responses will be shown for the survey question overall instead of the piped text variations. To see how responses vary by group, filter your survey data by demographic.
